Focus On: Transition Town Kingston
April 2010
Transition Town Kingston is a community action group dedicated to tackling the challenges of climate change and peak oil (dwindling natural resources) through supporting positive local projects, from food growing to energy generation. They recently won the Green Project Award at the South London Green Guardian awards, in recognition of their innovative work in the borough.
Since July 2008, Transition Town Kingston has been working to build awareness of the key issues and encourage local people to take action. This has included:
- holding several challenging film screenings, panel discussions and talks
- setting up a local food group that has initiated a garden share scheme and is in the process of establishing a food co-operative
- working in partnership with Bounce, a local community interest theatre company to run environmentally-themed drama workshops in 5 local primary schools
- responding as a group to local consultations

Saturday 17 April is the date for The Big Launch Party, when the group officially comes of age. This will showcase the projects that have been set up by local people, in a celebration of how the community can come together to create a sustainable, happy future for Kingston.
The event will take place at Kingston Working Men’s Club, Old London Road, Kingston from 5pm onwards and will include workshops (theatre workshop by Bounce Theatre, bee-keeping, eco-bag making and making insert homes), guest speakers, discussions, videos and stalls. There will also be a buffet of homemade food, licensed bar, a DJ and local band.
It is free and is open to everyone, so please do go along.
